Polyfil or silicone — which form is right for you?
10 October 2026 · Sugar Shell fitters
Polyfil forms
Featherweight, warm against the skin, silent under clothing, and suitable immediately after surgery. Approx. 90–160g.
Silicone forms
Weight-matched to natural tissue, helping rebalance posture and shoulder load after a single mastectomy. Heavier, and usually advised once healing is complete.
How to choose
The short version: polyfil is the lighter, gentler option for early recovery, and silicone is the better match for posture support once you are healed. Here is how they compare:
| Polyfil | Silicone | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Approx. 90–160g, featherweight | Weight-matched to natural tissue, so heavier |
| Warmth | Warm against the skin | Ask your fitter about feel and temperature |
| Posture support | Light, so it adds little counterbalance | Helps rebalance posture and shoulder load |
| Price | See the product page for current pricing | See the product page for current pricing |
| Usually recommended | Immediately after surgery | Once healing is complete |
When to switch
Many people start with a polyfil form and move to silicone later. Switching is a conversation for your surgeon, who knows your recovery and can tell you when you are ready. Once you have been cleared, our fitters can help you find the right weight and fit.
Caring for either one
Both forms need gentle handling to last. Read our guide to washing a prosthesis for the steps that keep them in shape.
